Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and former TV journalist Lauren Sanchez are all set to get married in Venice this week. The couple’s grand wedding is expected to be attended by 200 high-profile guests, including Bill Gates, Oprah Winfrey, Ivanka Trump, and the Kardashian family. But the wedding has sparked both excitement and controversy in the historic city.
As per recent media reports, Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez are planning to get married at The Aman Venice, a five-star hotel on the Grand Canal. This 16th-century palazzo, known as Palazzo Papadopoli, is one of the city’s most luxurious and exclusive properties. It offers a quiet, private atmosphere with just 24 rooms and suites. Guests enjoy in-room services, with no front desk or check-in lines.
This hotel is not new to celebrity weddings. In 2014, Hollywood actor George Clooney married human rights lawyer Amal Clooney at the same venue. The Aman Venice combines old-world charm with modern luxury, giving guests the feeling of living in a museum.
Not everyone is celebrating. A protest group called “No Space for Bezos” raised concerns over the billionaire’s lavish plans. They opposed the couple’s earlier choice of venue, the Grande Scuola Misericordia, a 14th-century building in central Venice. The group planned a blockade of nearby canals to disrupt the event.
Following these threats, reports say the wedding party location has been moved to a more remote area – Tese 91 in the Arsenale, a historic shipyard zone on the city’s edge. Protesters claimed this as a win, saying, “We won! The protest managed to ruin Bezos’ plans.” They also said that Bezos’ two yachts, Koru and Abeona, will not be allowed into Venice.
While the official ceremony may still happen at Aman Venice, the change in party venue reflects the tension between luxury tourism and local activism in the city. As Bezos and Sanchez prepare to say “I do,” Venice is once again at the centre of global attention, for both romance and resistance.
