Sensex Today: Benchmark Indian equity indices traded under pressure on the final trading session of the week as investors on Dalal Street reacted to the Reserve Bank of India’s monetary policy decision announced on Friday.
At around 10:45 am, the BSE Sensex was quoting at 82,955, down 356 points or 0.43 per cent, after the RBI kept the repo rate unchanged at 5.25 per cent and retained its policy stance at ‘neutral’. The NSE Nifty50 was also in the red, trading at 25,504, lower by 139 points or 0.54 per cent.
The central bank raised its GDP growth forecast to 6.9 per cent for the first quarter of FY27 and revised its estimate for the second quarter (Q2FY27) higher to 7 per cent. However, the RBI refrained from providing a full-year growth outlook, citing the impending change in the GDP series.
On the inflation front, the Monetary Policy Committee nudged up its FY26 inflation projection to 2.1 per cent from 2 per cent. Analysts said the combination of higher growth and a slightly elevated inflation outlook could prompt the RBI to remain on a prolonged pause.
Broader markets also saw selling pressure, with the Nifty Midcap 100 and Nifty Smallcap 100 indices down 1.18 per cent and 1.5 per cent, respectively.
Sectorally, NSE indices were mixed. The Nifty IT index emerged as the top laggard, falling 1.9 per cent, while pharma, auto, metal, realty and media indices were also trading lower, with losses of up to 1.3 per cent.
Global cues
Asian equity markets extended losses on Friday, tracking weakness in US technology stocks that continued to weigh on global sentiment. South Korea’s Kospi was down around 3 per cent, while Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index slipped nearly 2 per cent.
Overnight on Wall Street, the tech-heavy Nasdaq 100 witnessed its sharpest three-day decline since April last year, Bloomberg reported, amid renewed concerns around artificial intelligence. The S&P 500 and the Nasdaq ended the session lower by 1.23 per cent and 1.59 per cent, respectively.
