People in Wales don’t recycle at work like they do at home

“I don’t recycle as much when I am out and about, I just bin it,” admits Gerwyn Pugh, 56, from Barry.

“It’s routine [at home], but out and about every bin takes a bit more time to work out.”

James Jenkins, 30, said he often took rubbish home with him given the limited options where he works.

“We only recycle cardboard because that’s our only waste.

“The more industrialised businesses need to do more, because they’ll have more of an impact than smaller businesses.”

Natalie James, 47, said she recycled “probably about the same” at work and at home.

“Because I work at a hospital we’ve got the recycling categories everywhere, so we have to.”

Although businesses in Wales are now required to sort their waste into six categories, collection arrangements can vary from area to area.

In the Vale of Glamorgan, businesses use a mix of council and private services, and the local authority said the change has resulted in a “higher quality of recycling”.

Carys Stephens, the council’s waste project officer, said there had been a “fantastic response from businesses.”

“There’s obviously going to be some that are critical of the idea, and they’re worried about extra costs and effort that goes into segregated recycling.

“But we’ve been doing segregated recycling for a couple of years now, and most people just take it in their stride.”
