Many of us have heard the advice not to take a bath immediately after eating, often passed down through generations as a simple rule of thumb. While it may sound like an old wives’ tale, scientific explanations show there is truth behind this belief.

According to health experts, bathing right after a meal can interfere with your body’s digestive process and cause discomfort. Here’s what you need to know about how bathing post-meal can impact your body’s digestion.

After eating, the body directs more blood flow to the stomach to aid digestion. However, when you bathe, whether in hot or cold water, your body tries to regulate its temperature. Bathing in hot water causes blood vessels to dilate, directing more blood to the skin and reducing the supply to the digestive organs, which can slow digestion. Conversely, bathing in cold water constricts blood vessels, drastically limiting blood flow throughout the body.

This diversion of blood away from the stomach can cause digestive problems such as indigestion, gas, constipation, acidity, and bloating.

Health experts often highlight that bathing immediately after eating can increase the likelihood of such problems, especially for those already suffering from gastric issues or conditions like IBS, colitis, or Crohn’s disease.

The reason lies in how the body prioritises energy use. After a meal, most energy is dedicated to digestion. Bathing redirects energy towards regulating body temperature, which reduces the energy available for effective digestion.

It is recommended to avoid any form of bathing for at least 90 to 120 minutes after eating. A good practice is to complete your bath before meals to allow your body to focus fully on digestion afterwards.
