Volkswagen CEO warns German workers of sweeping layoffs to come

BERLIN — The chief executive of Volkswagen this week previewed sweeping layoffs at the German automaker, a signal of broader problems for an industry that powers the world’s third-largest economy.

Addressing workers at the company’s headquarters in Wolfsburg, Germany, Volkswagen Group CEO Oliver Blume warned Tuesday that eliminating tens of thousands of jobs could be necessary to remain competitive.
