King Charles personally addressed the public with a statement after he received distressing news from South America.
A powerful earthquake of 7.4 magnitude had hit the country on Tuesday and left at least 181 people killed as 195 remain missing. The rescue operation is ongoing.
However, according to civilians, the official numbers are not even close to accurately describe the tragedy.
“To the people of Colombia,” the message from the King began.
“My wife and I were so dreadfully saddened to learn of the devastating earthquake that has struck your country, and the tragic loss of life and suffering it has caused.”
He sent is “special thoughts” for all the “bereaved and injured, those awaiting news of family and friends and the emergency responders working tirelessly to support those in need”.
“We greatly admire the resilience and strength of the Colombian people, and we send our deepest sympathy and heartfelt condolences during this most challenging and distressing period,” Charles wrote, signing off with his name at the end.
Desperate search continues to take place in the country. Meanwhile, civilian-run data cites that the number of missing people is close to 4000.
The country had already been going through a rough phase with crisis surrounding poverty and civil warfare. Aid agencies have warned that the first 48 to 72 hours are crucial for retrieving survivors.
