On her recent visit to Jharkhand for the convocation programmes of AIIMS Deoghar and IIT Dhanba, President Droupadi Murmu had the opportunity to enjoy some traditional dishes of the state. Chef Jaydev of Raj Bhavan revealed that a special menu featuring traditional Jharkhand cuisine was prepared for the President’s meal, with Rugda being a particular highlight. The President enjoyed it so much that she reportedly requested it twice, for both lunch and dinner. (Local18)

Rugda mushrooms are available only during the monsoon, and once the rainy season ends, they are no longer found. Its rich, earthy flavour is considered superior even to mutton or chicken, earning it the popular nickname ‘vegetarian mutton’. (Local18)

The President also tried bamboo Kiril, a dish made from tender bamboo shoots. This vegetable is valued for its flavour, often compared to fish in taste. Chef Jaydev shared that a bhujia made from bamboo shoots leaves a lasting impression, and the dish was specially prepared for the occasion. It was cooked with minimal oil and spices, in accordance with the President’s dietary requirements. (Local18)

Another dish served was drumstick greens, a traditional leafy vegetable from the Ranchi region, known for its health benefits. Rich in nutrients, it helps regulate high blood pressure and supports digestion while reducing bodily inflammation. The President, who previously served as Governor of Jharkhand, has a particular fondness for this local green and thoroughly enjoyed it with rice. (Local18)

Among the various breads offered, Madwa roti was the President’s favourite. Made from finger millet, it’s high in fibre and iron, making it effective in combating anaemia and supporting digestive health. (Local18)
