Andrew’s court appearance revives headache King Charles hoped was over

The Duke of York is expected to give evidence via video link in December after a man allegedly threatened him while he was walking his dogs near the Sandringham Estate.

While Andrew is not accused of any wrongdoing and is appearing solely as a witness, the case is once again expected to draw widespread attention to one of the Royal Family’s most controversial figures.

Since stepping back from public duties, he has been steadily removed from the monarchy’s public facing role.

King Charles has sought to reshape the institution around a smaller group of working royals, distancing the Crown from the scandals that have surrounded his younger brother.

In recent years, the disgraced royal has disappeared almost entirely from official royal life.

He no longer undertakes public engagements, does not appear on the Buckingham Palace balcony during major national celebrations and has been stripped of his honorary military appointments and official royal responsibilities.

Despite those efforts, every legal development involving Andrew inevitably reignites discussion of the controversies that led to his withdrawal from public life.

Although the December hearing is unrelated to those past events, media coverage is likely to revisit the episodes that reshaped his royal career, ensuring the focus extends far beyond the case itself.

Palace officials have adopted a consistent approach whenever Andrew returns to the headlines.

Rather than becoming involved, the Royal Household has largely chosen silence, avoiding public comment and allowing legal matters to proceed independently.

That strategy reflects King Charles’s wider vision of a streamlined monarchy focused on public service rather than controversy.
