Samara Weaving is officially joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Deadline reported on July 31 that the Australian actress has been cast as fan-favourite mutant Emma Frost in Marvel Studios’ upcoming X-Men reboot.
The casting gives Weaving the chance to bring one of Marvel’s most complex characters to life. Emma Frost is known in the comics for evolving from a powerful supervillain into a superhero, with telepathy serving as her signature ability.
Weaving has built a reputation as one of Hollywood’s rising genre stars through roles in Ready or Not, Scream VI, The Babysitter, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri and Bill & Ted Face the Music. She most recently appeared in Ready or Not 2: Here I Come and Over Your Dead Body.
Marvel’s new X-Men film will be directed by Jake Schreier, who previously helmed last year’s Thunderbolts. The reboot is expected to play a major role in the studio’s next chapter following Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox, which returned the X-Men rights to Marvel in 2019.
Fans will also see familiar mutant faces before the reboot arrives. Actors including Ian McKellen, Patrick Stewart and James Marsden are set to reprise their iconic roles in Avengers: Doomsday, bringing together heroes from across the Marvel universe.
