Shrek’s Donkey is finally getting his own movie with a confirmed release date.
The fan-favourite character, voiced by Eddie Murphy, will star in a prequel that tells his origin story.
The upcoming animated project will be helmed by The Lego Ninjago Movie director Charlie Bean and The Bad Guys producer Matt Flynn, per The Hollywood Reporter.
Donkey will be available to watch in cinemas on 30 June 2028.
The character first appeared in the original Shrek film in 2001 and quickly became one of the franchise’s most popular characters for his humour, energy and loyal friendship with Shrek.
Although this is Donkey’s first solo movie, another Shrek character has already had two spin-offs.
Puss in Boots, voiced by Antonio Banderas, got his own film in 2011, followed by Puss in Boots: The Last Wish in 2022.
Before Donkey’s solo adventure arrives, fans will see him return in Shrek 5, which is set to be released on 30 June 2027.
A teaser for Shrek 5 shows the group setting off on a new adventure before ending up inside a dark prison, hinting at another action-filled journey.
Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz, and Eddie Murphy will return as Shrek, Fiona and Donkey. Zendaya, Marcello Hernandez and Skyler Gisondo have also joined the cast as Shrek and Fiona’s children.
