During the monsoon season, the presence of insects—including flies, mosquitoes, and even snakes—becomes a persistent challenge, especially for farmers involved in animal husbandry. The rapid breeding of flies and mosquitoes not only causes discomfort to livestock but also negatively impacts their health and productivity.

Despite using conventional methods such as mosquito nets and insecticides, many farmers continue to struggle with pest control. These methods often prove ineffective or lead to side effects such as skin irritation in animals. The resulting stress on livestock can lead to a noticeable drop in milk production, translating into financial loss for dairy farmers.

An Indigenous Solution That Works

Ranjodh Singh, a dairy farmer from Shahjahanpur, Uttar Pradesh, shared an effective, low-cost solution he discovered. After facing limited success with insecticides and mosquito nets, he turned to a traditional remedy—detergent water.

Typically used for cleaning, detergent contains ingredients that act as mild insecticides. Ranjodh recommends mixing two tablespoons of detergent in 10 litres of water and spraying the solution throughout the cattle shed. According to him, insects that come into contact with the spray die instantly. The method is not only effective but also safe for animals, causing no adverse reactions.

Targeted Application at Dusk

Flies and mosquitoes tend to be most active in the evenings, especially around the legs and hooves of animals. To counter this, farmers can apply the detergent spray directly to these areas at dusk. This targeted approach offers immediate relief, enabling livestock to rest undisturbed and recover their energy, ultimately supporting better milk yield and overall well-being.
