No. 1 Jannik Sinner wilts in heat, eliminated from French Open

Top-ranked Jannik Sinner appeared to struggle with the heat at the French Open on Thursday, going from one game away from victory to finding himself out of the tournament in the second round with a 3-6, 2-6, 7-5, 6-1, 6-1 loss to 56th-ranked Argentine opponent Juan Manuel Cerundolo.

Sinner was serving for the match at 5-4, 0-40 in the third set when he bent over on the court and walked to his chair. He asked for assistance and left the court. Hs entire light blue outfit appeared soaked through with sweat.

When he came back with an ice pack around his neck, he proceeded to lose the next point with a poorly sliced backhand wide. Sinner ultimately dropped 18 of the next 20 games.

The temperature at the start of the match was 84 degrees Fahrenheit.

Sinner, who had been on a 30-match winning streak stretching back to February, also struggled in the heat at the Australian Open against Eliot Spizzirri in January. The roof was closed, and the third-round match swung his way.

Sinner was attempting to complete a career Grand Slam by winning his first French Open title.
