At the amfAR Cannes gala on Thursday afternoon, as the sun set on the Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc, in seaside Antibes, France, guests with deep pockets flocked to the stunning setting to raise money for AIDS research — and be photographed in their finery.
The energy in the room was palpable. Even the auctioneer Simon de Pury accidentally broke his gavel while marking the winning bid on an auction item, several of which sold for hundreds of thousands of euros. My favorite piece up for bid was a colorful collection of 10 of Andy Warhol’s Marilyns — derived from a photograph of Marilyn Monroe — which sold for 2.8 million euros, or about $3.2 million, in a matter of minutes.
Here are some images that reflect a starry night on the French Riviera.
