The global craze for magnesium supplements is surging, with millions embracing them for better sleep, improved digestion, and enhanced calmness. But experts remain divided on their real benefits.
According to a BBC report, magnesium is an essential mineral involved in over 300 biological processes, including nerve signalling, blood sugar control, blood pressure regulation, and heart rhythm balance. Adults need a daily intake of 300mg for men and 270mg for women, which can be sourced from seeds, nuts, green vegetables, and whole grains.
Social media influencers and health brands have popularised magnesium as a super mineral, claiming it enhances sleep and calms the mind. However, experts caution that not everyone needs supplementation, as it is difficult to detect a magnesium deficiency due to most of the body’s magnesium being stored in bones and tissues. Despite this, many people take supplements without consulting a doctor and report benefits.
Health experts assert that excessive magnesium intake is generally safe for healthy individuals, as the body excretes surplus magnesium through the kidneys. Nonetheless, even healthy people might experience side effects such as diarrhoea, vomiting, or nausea from too much magnesium. For those with kidney disease, excessive magnesium can be perilous and lead to life-threatening hypermagnesemia.
Therefore, it is essential to consult a doctor before starting supplements. Experts recommend consuming a diet rich in seeds, nuts, fruits, green vegetables, and whole grains to meet magnesium needs naturally. Those who avoid these foods may also miss out on other essential nutrients like vitamins C and K, and fibre. Balancing one’s diet is crucial before considering any supplement, and following trends without professional advice is not advisable.
