How did Jesus de Miguel die? Everything to know about fatal collision with Jesus Owono

Jesus de Miguel died after suffering a cardiac arrest in a collision with FC Andorra goalkeeper Jesus Owono during Monday’s LaLiga 2 match, and was pronounced dead at 8:00 a.m. local time on Tuesday. He was 30.

The incident occurred in the seventh minute of stoppage time with the score tied 2-2. Owono rushed out of his area all the way to midfield to challenge for a long ball that De Miguel, the Tenerife forward, was trying to reach.

The two collided heavily, and De Miguel went down. Owono was immediately shown a red card for “making a sudden, high-kicking tackle on an opponent using excessive force whilst the ball was in play.”

The match was suspended as medical staff treated De Miguel, who was taken by ambulance to hospital and admitted to intensive care. Owono, walking off after his red card, turned around and joined other players rushing to check on De Miguel.

Tenerife said Monday night the player was “stable, given the seriousness of the condition,” but early Tuesday reported his condition had “deteriorated neurologically.”

The club then confirmed his death.

The Spanish Football Federation suspended all activity Tuesday, November 3, including Copa del Rey and Copa de la Reina matches, and cancelled the presentation of Spain Under-21s’ fixture against Japan.

All UEFA competition matches this week will be preceded by a moment of silence.
