Russell Brand’s trial took new turn after his lawyer made strong claims about a documentary that first brought many allegations against him into the public eye.
During his final speech in court, Brand’s lawyer Ian Winter KC said the 2023 Channel 4 Dispatches programme affected the case before it even reached trial.
He claimed the documentary encouraged women to come forward and changed the way people looked at Brand. He told the jury that the programme “poisoned the well of justice”.

Winter, however, also said that the women who are involved in the case were influenced by what they saw in the documentary.
He questioned how their claims can be treated as fully separate from the programme.
Brand is currently on trial at Southwark Crown Court over seven charges, which including rape and sexual assault but he, moreover, denied all those charges.
The lawyer also asked the jury to not to judge Brand for his personal life, sharing that having relationships with many women was not a crime.

Winter also spoke about how the allegations affected Brand’s family life as well as he reminded the court that a hospital refused to let him visit his baby son after his heart surgery in 2023.
