Everything at stake for NWSL Decision Day: Shield, playoff spots, hosting and more

Sunday for the NWSL is “Decision Day” — and unlike some years past, the final day of this season will be true to its name.

The 2026 NWSL Shield and the final spot in this year’s postseason will both be decided during a slate of eight matches on Decision Day. All of the games will kick off simultaneously at 5 p.m. ET on the ESPN family of networks, and every single match has implications on playoff seeding.

Gotham FC could win their first NWSL Shield with a win or a draw against the Utah Royals (ESPN, ESPN Deportes).

Denver Summit FC, the North Carolina Courage and the Seattle Reign are all fighting for the last of eight playoff spots and North Carolina hosts Denver. ESPN2 will have a whip-around show following all eight games and the live standings.

Here are the scenarios you need to know going into the final day of the NWSL season on Sunday.

Gotham’s NWSL Shield to lose

Gotham (17-5-7, 58 points) has led the NWSL standings for the past 11 match weeks, and they will clinch their first NWSL Shield with a win or draw on Sunday at home against the Utah Royals.

The San Diego Wave is the only other team that can win the 2026 NWSL Shield. San Diego (17-8-4, 55 points) is three points behind Gotham. The only way that San Diego can clinch the Shield is with a victory over Bay FC (ESPN+) and a Gotham FC loss.

That scenario would leave Gotham and San Diego level on points. The first tiebreaker is goal difference. Currently, Gotham is +14 and San Diego is +13.

In a scenario where San Diego wins and Gotham loses, that goal difference automatically flips in the Wave’s advantage. San Diego previously won the NWSL Shield in 2023, the team’s second year of existence.

Gotham FC won the NWSL Championship that year as the last team to qualify. They repeated that feat in 2025, when they also won the Concacaf W Champions Cup and qualified for the Club World Cup. The Shield has been elusive, however, and winning it would cement this as Gotham’s most consistent season to date despite a slew of injuries.

Midfielders Rose Lavelle and Jaedyn Shaw have been sidelined of late with minor issues. Defenders Emily Sonnett and Bruninha, and forward Jordynn Dudley, are all on the season-ending injury list.

Denver, North Carolina Seattle jockey for final playoff berth

Seattle currently sits in eighth place and the driver’s seat with 44 points. North Carolina is chasing with 42 points, and Denver with 41 points.

The Reign are still looking for their first NWSL Championship despite having three NWSL Shields and making three appearances in the final. They will also be playing to extend the career of midfielder Jess Fishlock, who is the only player still playing with her original team from the inaugural 2013 NWSL season. Fishlock announced that she will retire after this season.

A Reign victory over the Orlando Pride (ESPN+) will clinch Seattle a playoff berth for the ninth time in 13 seasons. A draw against Orlando would still be enough for Seattle to clinch the No. 8 seed if North Carolina loses to Denver, since it would put the Reign 4 points. clear of the Summit.

North Carolina and Denver both need a victory plus help to qualify for the playoffs. A draw between the two in the game in Cary, N.C. (ESPN+) would automatically eliminate both teams and Seattle would qualify.

North Carolina could advance with a win over Denver combined with Seattle failing to beat Orlando. A Courage victory and Seattle loss would send North Carolina into eighth on points. A Courage victory and Seattle draw would leave both teams tied on 45 points, but the Courage have a superior goal difference, which is the first tiebreaker. (North Carolina would maintain that superiority automatically with a victory and a Seattle draw).

Denver’s only path to the postseason is a victory over North Carolina combined with a Seattle loss. That would put Denver and Seattle level on 44 points, and Denver would win the goal-difference tiebreaker.

Denver is an expansion team in its first season and the highest scoring team in the NWSL this year heading into Decision Day with 53 goals after smashing Racing Louisville 6-1 last week.

Can Ashley Sanchez break the record?

North Carolina Courage forward Ashley Sanchez enters Decision Day with 20 goals, tied for the single-season NWSL history. Kansas City Current forward Temwa Chawinga scored 20 goals in 25 games in 2024. Sunday will be Sanchez’s 30th game in what is the longest NWSL season to date.

Sanchez has failed to score in her last three games. She is virtually guaranteed to win the NWSL Golden Boot. Orlando forward Barbra Banda is the next closest scorer with 17 goals. Banda missed the past two games and will miss Sunday’s match due to CDC restrictions preventing her prompt return to the U.S. following an international match in Uganda on Oct. 8.

Only once previously has the NWSL Golden Boot winner missed the playoffs: 2017, when Sam Kerr scored 17 goals for Sky Blue FC (now Gotham FC).

Denver scored the most goals this season (53, one more than Kansas City). Never in the NWSL has the highest-scoring team missed the playoffs.

Home-field quarterfinals and seeding at stake

The Washington Spirit and Kansas City Current sit in third and fourth, respectively, entering Decision Day, meaning they are in position to host quarterfinal matches next weekend if they maintain those spots.

Washington briefly sat atop the table in the summer and was in second place until recently. The Spirit can still finish second with a win and a San Diego loss (the teams currently have identical goal differences, and they would be level on 55 points), but Washington can also fall as far as fifth on the day with a loss combined with victories by Kansas City and Angel City.

Kansas City cannot climb higher than third place but could fall out of the top four if they lose or draw against Racing Louisville (ESPN+), and Angel City FC defeats Boston Legacy FC.

Home field means more to Kansas City than any other team. The Current have lost only one regular season game since in three full seasons since opening CPKC Stadium in March 2024. They also lost a home quarterfinal to Gotham FC last year as the No. 1 seed following a dominant season.

Neither Angel City nor Utah Royals FC have hosted a playoff game before.

Utah has the most complicated path to hosting a quarterfinal. The Royals would need to beat Gotham and have both of these happen: A Louisville victory over Kansas City and Boston beating or drawing Angel City. Utah would win all tiebreakers in that scenario.

Angel City can clinch a home quarterfinal with a victory over Boston in combination with Chicago defeating Washington, or Louisville defeating or drawing with Kansas City. A draw could still be enough for a home quarterfinal for Angel City if Louisville wins, Gotham wins or draws, and Houston defeats or draws the Portland Thorns (or even if Portland wins, logically, due to goal difference – but not mathematically certain).
