Five Guys apologizes for botched BOGO deal and offers customers redo

Five Guys will be restarting its former buy one, get one promotion after an unsuccessful attempt last month.

The burger and fries chain launched a BOGO promotion with burgers to celebrate its 40th birthday on February 17. However, due to an overwhelming public response, Five Guys was not able to cater to every customer.

According to a press release the company published Monday, they are asking for a “do-over.”

“You visited our restaurants in overwhelming numbers, and we weren’t ready for you,” the company said in the release. “We didn’t meet our own standards, and that’s not something we take lightly.”

“We were genuinely humbled by your response,” Five Guys Founder Jerry Murrell added. “Forty years is a long time, and the outpouring of support for our 40th birthday reminded us why we love what we do.”

To make up for their mistake, they are hosting a 40th After Party running from March 9 through March 12.

“Our teams have been hard at work replenishing fresh product and making the preparations we should have made the first time around,” the press release emphasized.

The promotion can be redeemed either online or using the Five Guys app. Customers will then need to purchase any burger at the regular price and use the promotional code FGAFTERPARTY.

The deal cannot be used in-store and only applies to participating Five Guys locations across Canada and the United States.

The company also clarified that it would be rewarding the chain’s employees for doing their best during the promotion’s first attempt by giving away $1.5 million in bonuses to store employees.

Five Guys’ promotion comes shortly after a competing fast food restaurant, Wendy’s, announced it was hiring a Chief Tasting Officer, with the responsibility of trying the brand’s signature burgers, nuggets, and Frostys for an annual salary of $100,000.

The requirements of the job are simple: eating food from Wendy’s and sharing review videos. The employee can also record their fun, creative and honest food reviews from the comfort of their own home.

“Wendy’s is hiring a Chief Tasting Officer. You’ll help bring the vibes, taste and creativity to the company in ways no one else can,” read the job listing, which includes the note “YES, THIS IS REAL.

“Basically, you’ll get paid to eat Wendy’s, be chill, maybe make some content and maybe even star in ads. Whether it’s quarterly vlog check-ins, taste trending, or whatever, you’ll make cheddar just for liking cheddar.”
