Finding the perfect name for a baby can be stressful for parents during pregnancy – but one expert says a name is being unused and you should totally snatch it up.
Colleen Slagen is a baby name expert who is known on Instagram as “namingbebe.” She is now pushing for the name that ranks 6,250th in popularity to move up the list.
It’s Mamie.
“It’s a name that I feel should be amongst the top 100 popular names. I could totally see this name being mainstream, and yet it’s insanely uncommon,” Slagen told the Today Show’s webpage.
In her video, Slagen notes the name ranked 6,250th on the U.S. Social Security Administration list of baby names in 2025. Only 19 families chose to name their kid Mamie.

“Historically, it was a nickname for Mary or Margaret, or Mary-Margaret, and it means pearl. Could also be a nickname for Marie, Marian, Marguerite, or something like Matilda Marie, Maeve Margaret,” she says.
While some might note that Mamie is the word for grandma in French, Slagen argues other names used for grandmas, such as Poppy and Gigi, are still used for kids.
“Guarantee if you start hearing this out and about, you’re gonna have name envy,” she says.
Slagen revealed she started thinking about the name because Merlyn Steep’s daughter used Mamie despite her real name being Mary Willa.
“This name has big first lady energy, Mamie Eisenhower. I would use this name, but it pretty much rhymes with my first daughter’s name,” Slagen notes in her video.
