2026 Winter Olympics: Follow live updates Thursday from Milan Cortina

Alysa Liu won Olympic gold on Thursday night — the first Olympic medal for an American in women’s figure skating in 20 years.

The silver went to Kaori Sakamoto and bronze to Mone Chiba, both of Japan, while Americans Amber Glenn placed fifth and Isabeau Levito finished in 12th. Liu had the highest free skating score (150.20) of any skater on Thursday, propelling her to be the first American in women’s figure skating to win gold since Sarah Hughes in 2002.

The United States women’s hockey team is also golden after defeating Canada.

It required overtime, but the U.S. beat familiar foe Canada 2-1 in the gold medal game after a game-winning goal from Megan Keller. Team USA trailed 1-0 until captain Hilary Knight scored the equalizer in the 58th minute. It’s the third Olympic gold medal for the U.S. in women’s hockey. Since women’s hockey was introduced as an Olympic sport in 1998, the only two teams that have won gold are the U.S. and Canada.
