Rod Wave, Hip-Hop Artist, Arrested on Drug and Weapons Charges

The hip-hop star Rod Wave was arrested on weapons and drug charges in Atlanta on Friday, the same day he earned his first Grammy nomination.

The artist, whose real name is Rodarius Green, was taken into custody by the Atlanta Police Department and charged with two counts of possession of a controlled substance, reckless driving and possession of a firearm or knife during commission of or attempt to commit certain felonies, according to jail records.

Mr. Green, 27, was released on Saturday on an $8,000 bond, according to Drew Findling, one of his lawyers.

It was unclear what had led to Mr. Green’s arrest or if others had been involved. The Atlanta Police Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Sunday.

Lawyers for Mr. Green, including Mr. Findling, Marissa Goldberg and Zack Findling, said in a statement on Sunday that their client had been “unjustly profiled,” and that the arresting officer was a member of the Atlanta Police Department’s crime suppression unit.

“Mr. Green was targeted as part of this quota-driven approach, a practice that undermines justice and erodes community trust,” the lawyers said. “We look forward to vigorously challenging this baseless arrest and the clear violations of Mr. Green’s rights in court.”

Mr. Green was also arrested in Fulton County, Ga., which includes Atlanta, in May and June on more than a dozen charges including aggravated assault and battery. At the time, his lawyers told The Associated Press that there was “no truth” to the charges.

Mr. Green, whose distinctive style combines rapping and singing, was nominated last week for the Grammy Award for best song written for visual media for “Sinners,” which is featured in the horror film of the same name.

In 2023, he earned his third No. 1 album in three years with “Nostalgia.” Last year, his album “Last Lap” reached No. 2 on the charts.
