For couples struggling to conceive naturally, in-vitro fertilisation (IVF) has become a beacon of hope. This advanced reproductive technology involves combining a woman’s egg and a man’s sperm in a lab, and implanting the resulting embryo into the uterus. With its growing success rate, IVF has enabled countless families to experience the joy of parenthood, turning medical intervention into a story of new beginnings.

IVF technology is rapidly advancing, but modern lifestyles and unhealthy eating habits are adversely affecting the reproductive health of both men and women. Infertility issues are increasingly emerging in young adults aged 20-25, with women ceasing egg production prematurely and men experiencing declining sperm count and quality.

Consequently, many couples struggle to conceive naturally after marriage. Additionally, conditions such as blocked fallopian tubes, endometriosis, ovulation problems, advanced age, or recurrent miscarriages necessitate IVF treatment.

What Happens To IVF When Sperm Count Is Zero?

Speaking to News18, Dr. Sonali Gupta, Gynecologist and IVF Specialist at Fortis Hospital, Greater Noida, explained that some men have a sperm count of zero. Initially, treatment aims to increase the sperm count, but if unsuccessful, donor semen is utilised through third-party reproduction.

The patient’s details, including blood group, eye colour, ethnic group, height, and hair colour, are sent to a registered semen bank to select suitable frozen semen samples. These samples are then used to fertilise the woman’s eggs, and the embryo is implanted in the uterus.

How IVF Works When A Woman Has Zero Egg Count

Dr. Sonali Gupta also noted that in some cases, women have a zero egg count due to premature menopause or other issues. Here, egg donation becomes necessary. Unlike semen, eggs are not frozen but are taken directly from another woman’s body. These donated eggs are fertilised with the man’s sperm to create an embryo, which is then implanted into the uterus, allowing the woman to become a mother.

When Should Couples Consider IVF?

According to IVF experts, couples who continuously try to conceive naturally without success should undergo tests. Men should get a sperm count test, while women should have an anti-mullerian hormone (AMH) test to identify any reproductive issues. Initially, fertility treatments are provided, and if successful, IVF is not required. However, if such treatments fail, IVF becomes the necessary option.

According to Indian laws, women aged 18 to 50 and men aged 21 to 55 can become parents through IVF.
