As soon as the monsoon begins, humidity levels inside homes rise, accompanied by an increase in insects. This sudden influx invites unwanted guests like lizards, which seek both food and a cool, dry shelter. Spotting one on the wall may be frightening, but if it enters the kitchen, the problem becomes even more unsettling.
While lizards are not directly harmful, their presence is far from pleasant. Pest control services and chemical sprays can be expensive and potentially unsafe for children or pets. Fortunately, there are several simple and effective home remedies to keep lizards away during the rainy season, without any harm or high costs.
- Seal All Entry Points: Lizards can squeeze through even the smallest gaps, windows, doors, vents, or wall cracks. Use sealant or putty to fill any visible cracks and gaps. Installing a mesh or net on windows is also a good preventive measure.
- Keep Your Home Clean: Humidity attracts flies, mosquitoes, and small insects, prime food for lizards. A clean home means fewer insects and fewer lizards. Sweep and mop regularly, avoid leaving dirty dishes overnight, and empty the dustbin daily.
- Declutter Dark Corners: Lizards hide in dark, cluttered places like piles of newspapers, unused boxes, or storage areas. Clear out junk regularly and clean behind furniture and cupboards at least once a week.
- Use Peppermint Oil Spray: Lizards dislike the strong smell of peppermint. Mix 10–15 drops of peppermint oil with water in a spray bottle and spray it around doors, windows, corners, and behind furniture. Reapply every couple of days for best results.
- Repel with Garlic and Onion: Their pungent smell acts as a natural repellent. Place garlic cloves or onion pieces near entry points like the sink, drains, windows, or storage areas to discourage lizards.
- Place Eggshells Strategically: Lizards mistake eggshells for signs of a larger predator and tend to avoid those areas. Wash and dry the shells, break them into halves, and place them on kitchen shelves, windowsills, and balconies. Replace them every 2–3 days.
- Try Coffee and Tobacco Tablets: Mix equal parts of coffee powder and tobacco, add a little water, and form small balls or tablets. Place them in areas where lizards are often seen. The smell keeps them away but keep these balls out of reach of children and pets.
- Let Pets Help: Cats and dogs aren’t scared of lizards and often chase them away. If you have pets at home, they’ll naturally help reduce lizard sightings by scaring them off from corners and hiding spots.
