You may have enjoyed puri-sabzi at countless places, but there’s something truly special about the flavours at Agarwal Puri Bhandar, nestled in Chowk Bazaar, in the heart of Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh. This iconic eatery has been serving up its legendary puri and potato curry for over 73 years. With a taste reminiscent of the classic Bhandare-style meal, it continues to draw visitors from far and wide.

A Legacy Of Flavour

In conversation with Local 18, Pradeep Agarwal, the current proprietor, shared the story behind the enduring success of this humble establishment. His father, the late Shri Ram Agarwal, founded the shop in 1952, renting a small 10-by-12-foot space.

Back then, Bhopal was a quieter, smaller city. The nearby Jumerati Gate would close by 7 pm, prompting customers to arrive early for their evening meals. It didn’t take long for the delicious, homestyle puri-sabzi to capture hearts and create a loyal following.

A Culinary Journey Through The Decades

From just 15 paise for a plate in the 1950s to Rs 60 today, the journey of Agarwal Puri Bhandar reflects both tradition and timeless appeal. In its early days, five puris and a generous serving of potato curry were available for just 10 to 15 annas. Long-standing patrons fondly recall Ram Agarwal himself cooking and serving the meals.

The menu has since grown to include raita, pickle, papad, gulab jamun, and dahi bade, all paired perfectly with freshly made puris. The shop has maintained its essence while keeping up with evolving tastes.

Carrying The Legacy Forward

Now run by the third generation, Pradeep Agarwal proudly continues his father’s legacy. Regulars still park their vehicles outside Chowk Bazaar and walk in for a plate of their favourite dish. The family grinds its own spices in-house, preserving the signature taste that has stood the test of time.

His sons, Ayush and Aman Agarwal, have also joined the family business, ensuring the tradition continues. The family has even expanded, opening a new outlet, Rajbhog, in MP Nagar, bringing their beloved flavours to another part of the city.
