Media Stocks Fall Today: Shares of media and entertainment firms fell on Tuesday after US President Donald Trump announced a 100% tariff on films produced outside the United States.

Trump, in a post on Truth Social late Monday, said: “Our movie-making business has been stolen from the United States of America, by other Countries, just like stealing ‘candy from a baby’. To solve this long-time, never-ending problem, I will be imposing a 100 percent Tariff on any and all movies that are made outside of the United States.”

The move is expected to weigh heavily on India’s film industry, which exports movies in multiple languages to the US and enjoys strong demand among the diaspora.

The Nifty Media index slipped over 1%, with seven of its 10 stocks ending in the red. Prime Focus was the worst hit, dropping 5% to its lower circuit at ₹175.94 on the NSE. Shares of PVR INOX fell nearly 3% to ₹1,072.10, while Mukta Arts declined about 2% to ₹68.

Trump had first floated the idea of such tariffs in May, but has yet to announce a timeline for implementation. Analysts noted that enforcement could prove complicated, particularly given the dominance of digital distribution and uncertainties over how the rule would apply to US productions filmed abroad.

The announcement comes shortly after the Trump administration imposed fresh tariffs on pharmaceutical products.
