In today’s screen-heavy lifestyle, eye discomfort, dryness, and fatigue are increasingly common. Many turn to over-the-counter eye drops for relief, but experts caution that these may offer only temporary comfort.

“Digital eye strain, or computer vision syndrome, isn’t just about dryness,” says Dr Sujal Shah, Director, Department of Ophthalmology, Sir H. N. Reliance Foundation Hospital. “It’s caused by reduced blinking, prolonged near focus, and poor screen ergonomics. Lubricating drops soothe symptoms briefly, but without behavioral changes, the problem persists.”

Studies show that screen use reduces blink rate by nearly 60%, causing tears to evaporate quickly. While eye drops replenish moisture, they don’t fix tear film instability or underlying gland dysfunction often at the core of persistent dryness.

“Patients often ask why their drops don’t work,” explains Dr. Shah. “It’s usually because their tear quality is poor, or they aren’t blinking properly. Drops alone can’t fix that.”

Experts recommend a holistic approach: following the 20-20-20 rule (every 20 minutes, look 20 feet away for 20 seconds), adjusting screen brightness, and using blue light filters. Conscious blinking and warm compresses can also support tear quality.

In some cases, prescription medications or in-office treatments may be necessary. Regular eye exams help identify deeper issues early on.

“Digital discomfort isn’t a minor issue, it’s a warning sign,” emphasizes Dr. Shah. “We’re seeing even young patients with chronic dry eye due to screen overuse. Early intervention can prevent long-term damage.”

Eye drops do help but only when paired with better digital habits and personalized eye care.
