Hepatitis can lead to liver cancer, liver failure, and other serious liver diseases. (News18 Hindi)

For most people, a dull ache in the stomach or a wave of nausea after eating are usual signs of indigestion, but sometimes, this familiar discomfort may not be arising from the abdomen. In fact, it could be the liver’s way of pointing towards more serious conditions like Hepatitis. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), hepatitis affects more than 300 million people, with India bearing one of the highest burdens in the world. This condition of the liver often hides itself until significant damage has already been done to the body. Even when its symptoms do appear, they mimic those of common digestive trouble, making diagnosis more difficult. In a situation where routine liver screening is still not that usual, the quiet symptoms of Hepatitis are unintentionally neglected until the liver starts to fail.

Dr Nitin Manglik, Consultant, Medical Gastroenterology, Manipal Hospital, Ghaziabad shares all you need to know:

How to spot hepatitis before it’s too late?

When the liver gets inflamed due to viral infections or toxins like alcohol and drugs, Hepatitis develops. It continues to progress slowly over time, and causes liver cirrhosis, liver failure, or even cancer if left untreated. While most people continue to go on with their daily lives without experiencing any symptoms of Hepatitis, some may notice:

Digestive issues

Diarrhea is a common symptom of Hepatitis often accompanied by a feeling of nausea, loss of appetite, and a disinterest in food. This is because the liver plays an important role in processing nutrients, and even minor dysfunction can affect the stomach.

Pain in the abdomen

The liver is positioned just beneath the ribcage on the right side of the upper belly. So, inflammation can cause one to experience pain, discomfort, or an unusual fullness in this area.

Persistent fatigue

One of the most subtle yet first signs of Hepatitis is chronic fatigue and weakness. This is different from normal tiredness because here, exhaustion does not go away even with rest or sound sleep. Constantly feeling fatigued can further impact concentration and memory, making it difficult to perform routine tasks.

Dark-coloured urine and pale stools

These changes reflect an alteration in bile production and processing, both of which are functions of the liver. Dark urine may appear tea-colored, and stool appears unusually light or clay-colored.

Yellowing of the eyes or skin (jaundice)

This is perhaps the most identifiable symptom of Hepatitis. Jaundice is caused by the accumulation of bilirubin, which is a waste substance that the liver typically eliminates. It indicates a serious symptom of liver stress or damage and requires immediate medical care.

How to manage hepatitis?

Once diagnosed, managing hepatitis involves a combination of medical treatment and healthy lifestyle choices. In some cases, antiviral medications can help control the virus and prevent serious complications like cirrhosis or liver cancer. In cases where the liver is severely damaged, a liver transplant may be necessary. While this is a major procedure, it can be life-saving for patients with end-stage liver damage. However, many individuals can manage their condition effectively through timely medication and supportive care.

Simple changes, such as avoiding alcohol, eating a nutritious diet, engaging in regular physical activity, and staying up to date with vaccinations, can greatly enhance liver health. Acting early not only improves the chances of recovery but also helps prevent long-term complications associated with chronic hepatitis.
