Infosys founder NR Narayana Murthy has expressed strong confidence in artificial intelligence (AI), asserting that it will drive the growth of the Indian information technology (IT) sector, despite concerns about slowing growth and potential job losses.

Murthy revealed in an interview to MoneyControl that using OpenAI’s Generative AI tool, ChatGPT, has significantly increased his productivity. Murthy said it helped me to cut his speech preparation time from 30 hrs to 5 hrs.

His comments came amid warnings from several tech leaders forewarning potential workforce shrinkage due to AI, hailing it ‘once-in-a-lifetime-tech’.

The Fear of Job Loss

Murthy dismissed the fear that technology will eliminate jobs, arguing that it will instead create new types of jobs. He shared his experience with ChatGPT, emphasizing that the key lies in defining the requirements and asking the right questions.

A Positive Outlook

He believes that in the future, programmers and analysts will become more adept at specifying and solving complex problems, thereby enhancing industry growth.

Industry Insights

Murthy’s optimistic view comes at a time when the Indian IT industry is experiencing sluggish growth and slow hiring. Recently, the CEOs of Infosys and HCLTech called for changes in IT business models to adapt to AI innovations. HCLTech CEO C Vijayakumar noted on February 24, 2025, that the long-standing traditional IT business model is due for a transformation.

Supporting Education

Murthy’s comments coincided with the announcement that Catamaran, his family investment office, has launched a 20-year scholarship at IIM Ahmedabad. This scholarship, protected against inflation, will support the MBA topper each year.

The IT industry veteran also believes that AI, when used as an assistive tool, will not only help software companies deliver faster and better results but also reduce errors and enhance the quality of work.
