Many people are terrified at the sight of a snake, as a snakebite can be life-threatening. In rural areas, it is still common for snakebite victims to be taken to a traditional healer rather than a hospital, which often leads to fatalities. However, with timely and proper steps, a person bitten by a snake can be saved.

Speaking to Local18, Madurai-based snake rescuer Saha explains that it is crucial to know what should and should not be done after a snakebite. Snakes are of two types: venomous and non-venomous. If a venomous snake bites, the affected area typically becomes red and swollen which is a primary symptom of venomous bites.

Many people unknowingly provide incorrect first aid, such as tying a tight band around the bite area, sucking out the blood, cutting the wound with a blade, or applying some kind of paste or ointment. These actions are not only ineffective but can also worsen the situation. Such methods may lead to excessive blood loss and increased harm without extracting the venom. Therefore, these practices should be strictly avoided.

Saha further mentioned that the correct approach after a snakebite is to immediately move the victim to a safe location. Do not waste time trying to catch the snake. If it is confirmed that the snake is venomous, reassure the victim and keep them calm.

The person should be carried gently to avoid excessive movement, especially near the bite site. They should be given plenty of water, and any jewellery or tight clothing near the affected area should be removed immediately to prevent complications due to swelling.

Most importantly, the victim must be taken to a hospital via ambulance as quickly as possible, ideally within one hour of the bite. This timely intervention can often save the person’s life.
