Homeowner shot by police during search for hit-and-run suspect in Eagle Rock neighborhood

A crash on the 134 Freeway started a chaotic chain of events in Eagle Rock on Tuesday after a homeowner who shot at a group of people fleeing the scene of a collision and allegedly tried to break into her home was shot by police.

The crash happened at around 3 p.m. on eastbound lanes near the N. Figueroa Street ramps, according to the California Highway Patrol.

After the crash, three people ran from the scene and into a neighborhood located just off the freeway near Eagle Vista Drive, CHP said. They requested backup from Los Angeles Police Department, who dispatched several crews of officers to the area.

Police searching the area said they were directed to a home in the 5300 block of Waldo Place, where one suspect was allegedly spotted running.

“As the officers were in the rear yard of that residence, they observed a female … in the yard of a neighboring residence armed with a handgun,” LAPD press release said in a news release.

That woman was identified by police as 51-year-old Jillian Shriner. Property records show that she lives at the home with Scott Shriner, the longtime bassist for LA-based rock band Weezer who she has been married to since 2005, according to the Los Angeles Times. The band is scheduled to perform at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival on Saturday at the Empire Polo Club in Indio.

Officers say that they directed Shriner to drop the weapon “numerous times” but she continued to refuse.

“Shriner then pointed the handgun at the officers, and an Officer-Involved Shooting occurred,” the LAPD release said.

She was struck by gunfire in the shoulder and went back inside of her home. After the shooting, police said she told them she was trying to defend her home from the suspects running through the neighborhood.

Shriner and another woman were also detained after they exited the home. Shriner was taken to a hospital for treatment on the non-life-threatening injury, police said.

She was absentee-booked on suspicion of attempted murder and is being held in lieu of $1 million, according to Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department booking records.

Police recovered a 9mm handgun from the home, they said.

One of the three suspects, only identified as the driver of the car involved in the crash, was arrested while wearing only his underwear at around 4:20 p.m., police reported. He was allegedly pretending to be a resident at a home in the area when he was arrested.

He is expected to be charged with felony hit and run once he’s released from the hospital for treatment on an undisclosed injury.

Two suspects still remain at large and police have blocked off much of the area as their search continues.

All eastbound lanes of SR-134 were temporarily closed for the ongoing investigation, but they have since reopened. The neighborhood entrances were closed until the early morning on Wednesday as detectives continued to search for the two outstanding suspects.

No officers were injured in the incident.

Amending its earlier statements about police shooting at the suspects, CHP says that none of their officers opened fire.
