As soon as the summer season arrives, people start planning their holidays, often heading to places where adventure and nature converge beautifully. In such cases, river rafting emerges as a major attraction. Especially in Rishikesh, Uttarakhand, hundreds of thousands of tourists visit every year to experience rafting on the Ganga river. While river rafting can be thrilling, it can also be dangerous if safety rules are not followed.
Recently, a major accident was narrowly avoided at Neem Beach in Rishikesh when three tourists began to drown in the Ganga. The guides present there saved them at great personal risk. A day earlier, a young man from Dehradun tragically lost his life after a raft capsized. These incidents are reminders that while adventure is enjoyable, caution is equally necessary.
These two recent accidents in Rishikesh have shown how even a small act of negligence can prove fatal. Hence, it is crucial to know and follow essential safety guidelines before attempting river rafting.
Speaking to Local18, adventure sports officer Jaspal Chauhan stated that while the experience of river rafting in Rishikesh is exhilarating, adhering to safety measures is equally important. “During rafting, it is essential to follow the guide’s instructions and wear a life jacket and helmet properly. These pieces of equipment are vital for your safety,” he said.
Rafting guide Naveen explained that river rafting is an activity in which one travels in the direction of the river’s flow through a rubber boat (raft) in fast-moving water. An experienced guide accompanies the group, giving instructions throughout the journey. The most important item during rafting is the life jacket. This jacket keeps you afloat if you fall into the water and prevents drowning.
Before beginning the activity, the guide gives a safety briefing that outlines what to do in various situations. It is extremely important to listen attentively and follow these instructions. Many tourists ignore the guide’s directions in the thrill of adventure, which often leads to accidents.
Important Safety Measures
- Wearing a life jacket is the most essential thing. Never take it lightly, and do not make the mistake of removing it while rafting.
- Raft only in the presence of an experienced guide. If the guide is trained and certified, they will be better equipped to ensure your safety.
- Always check the condition of the river before rafting. Avoid the activity during the monsoon or when the river’s water level is unusually high.
- Do not go rafting after consuming alcohol or drugs, as they slow down your reflexes and increase the risk of accidents.
- Wearing the right clothing is very important. Choose non-slip footwear and comfortable, safety-oriented and breathable clothes.
