Gupshup, a conversational AI platform, has reportedly confirmed laying off 300 employees over the last 18 months. The company cited a strategic move to streamline its operations and sharpen focus on profitability after a period of aggressive expansion.
In a statement shared with the Economic Times, the company clarified that the layoffs were part of a larger consolidation plan that followed a series of acquisitions and rapid hiring since 2021. Gupshup’s workforce had swelled to 1,500 during that time.
“Over the past 18 months, through a combination of additions and reductions, our net employee count has been reduced by 300,” a Gupshup spokesperson was quoted as saying. “As always, we handle every discussion with empathy and respect, providing support and following HR processes.”
The company said that severance packages were offered to impacted employees, which included notice period pay and extended employment benefits. But it stopped short of specifying the departments or geographic locations affected by the downsizing. Gupshup also stated that there are no current plans for further layoffs.
The clarification comes amid an earlier report suggesting that around 200 staff were let go in a recent restructuring round this month, prompting speculation that total layoffs had reached 500. Gupshup has denied those claims, according to the ET report.
Founded in 2004, Gupshup provides messaging APIs and AI-driven conversational solutions for enterprises. Over the years, it has become a major player in the AI-powered customer engagement sector, with support from high-profile investors like Tiger Global and Fidelity. The company has raised approximately $484 million to date.
Following a $100 million Series F funding round in 2022, Gupshup acquired multiple startups in the conversational AI domain, including AskSid, OneDirect, Knowlarity, Active.ai, and Dotgo. In the financial year ending March 2023, Gupshup reported revenues of ₹1,624.5 crore and a net profit of ₹49.2 crore.
