Former Pakistan captain Inzamam-ul-Haq has urged the country’s cricket authorities to adopt a long-term approach, warning that frequent changes in management and selection are harming the team’s progress.
Speaking to the media, Inzamam attributed Pakistan’s struggles over the past two years to inconsistent decision-making and a lack of structured planning.
“In the past two years, the performance of the Pakistan team has declined. If we don’t work in the right direction, we will continue to struggle,” he said.
He cautioned that repeatedly altering the coaching staff, management, and playing XI would not yield improvements, stressing the need for a comprehensive evaluation of the team’s shortcomings.
“Changing management, coaches, and players repeatedly will not solve the problem. We need to sit down and analyze where the mistakes are being made,” he stated.
Inzamam highlighted how constant reshuffling affects players’ confidence, making it difficult for the team to build momentum. “If there are constant changes, players won’t gain the confidence they need, and the situation will remain the same,” he added.
The former chief selector also backed Babar Azam, describing him as a top-class player experiencing a difficult phase. However, he maintained that Pakistan’s struggles go beyond individual performances.
“Babar Azam is a top player. Everyone goes through a rough patch, but the national team hasn’t been playing good cricket for the past few months,” he said.
Reiterating the need for a long-term vision, Inzamam called for trust in the management and players while addressing the underlying issues. “Trust the management and the players, and work together to identify where the mistakes are,” he said.
Amidst recent debate regarding the influence 90’s players have on the current team, as well as having their own achievements questioned by former players, Inzamam emphasized the contributions of past generations.
Reflecting on Pakistan’s cricketing history, he stated that 90’s players helped shape the country’s cricketing identity.
“If we look at the players from the 90s generation, Pakistan cricket would not be the same without them,” he concluded.
