Taliban's New Laws Another Attack on Women's Rights, DeCarlo

Islamabad - Rosemary De Carlo, the United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping and Political Affairs, further restricted the implementation of the 'moral law' by the Taliban rulers of Afghanistan on human rights and freedoms. It has been declared that girls and women of the country will be particularly affected.

They say that the implementation of such unreasonable laws will further limit civil liberties in Afghanistan and make it more difficult for the country to become a part of the international community.

The Taliban has enacted a new law with 35 clauses about restrictions on general behavior and lifestyle. Under this law, it is mandatory for women to cover their entire body and face. In addition, the new law also prohibits them from speaking or singing loudly in public gatherings.

Another provision of the law prohibits women from looking at men with whom they are not related by blood or marriage.

In case of violation of this law, punishments ranging from verbal warnings to fines and imprisonment of varying duration have been prescribed. The moral police working under the Taliban's Ministry of Good and Bad will enforce this law.

The special representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Afghanistan, Roza Otanbayova, has said that the implementation of this law will further tighten the restrictions already imposed on the rights of women and girls in the country.

They have also expressed their determination that they will continue to press the Taliban rulers to improve the human rights situation in the country.
