Fire breaks out in Dasu Dam's Chinese staff camp rescue operation underway

According to an official of Rescue 1122 in Upper Kohistan, a fire broke out in a store of the camp, which engulfed the rest of the building.

According to Rescue 1122, a fire has broken out in the Barsen camp of Chinese workers located at Dasu in the Upper Kohistan district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, which is being extinguished.

Ehsan Ali, an official of Rescue 1122 Upper Kohistan, told Independent Urdu that according to initial reports, a fire broke out in a store in the camp, which engulfed the rest of the building.

Ehsan Ali said that the intensity of the fire is high, that's why the teams from Shangla and Lower Kohistan, including the rescue team of Upper Kohistan, have been called, who are engaged in extinguishing the fire since around four o'clock in the morning on Tuesday. No casualties have been reported so far.

Ehsan further said that his team is at the spot and the cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained. The cause will be determined only after the operation is completed


He said: The intensity of the fire is very high and it is spreading in the camp while the fire brigade vehicles around the camp are also facing water problems as there is a problem of water shortage in this area.

Bursen Camp houses the staff working on the Dasu Dam. A staff bus from the same camp was attacked in July 2021 when staff was being shifted from the camp to the dam site. 13 deaths including nine Chinese workers were reported in this incident.

Pakistan's foreign office said after the incident that the explosion in the Chinese bus was caused by a gas leak, however, the statement issued by the Chinese embassy called the incident an explosion.

The Dasu Hydel Power Project is being built on the Indus River in the Dasu area of Kohistan, which will have the capacity to generate 4,320 megawatts of electricity. The construction contract of this project is with a Chinese company while the project consultants include a Turkish company.

Work on the project began in 2017 and is expected to be completed in 2023
