Turkey announces 'Ulema Conference' in Istanbul

Turkey’s Ministry of Religious Affairs has announced that it intends to hold a joint meeting between Afghan and Turkish scholars.


A key conference for inter-Afghan talks is being prepared in Turkey, with US Special Envoy for Afghanistan Zalmai Khalilzad arriving in Kabul on Saturday to meet with Afghan President Ashraf Ghani and the chairman of Afghanistan’s High National Reconciliation Council. Meetings with Dr. Abdullah Abdullah.


During the meeting, Zalmai Khalilzad discussed with both leaders the upcoming conference in Turkey and briefed them on the progress being made for the conference.


Zalmai Khalilzad’s visit to Kabul was a surprise. One week ago, Zalmai Khalilzad paid a secret visit to Kabul.


 The inter-Afghan peace conference in Turkey was expected in the first week of April, but there was no clear position on the Taliban’s participation in the conference. 


Then, on March 30, US Special Representative for Afghanistan Zalmai Khalilzad met with Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar, the Taliban’s political deputy and head of the political office in Qatar.


After the meeting, Taliban political spokesman Dr. Naeem Wardak told the media, We have talked to Turkish officials about the Istanbul conference. They have provided us with information about the conference. Now we are consulting on it.”


Dr. Naeem Wardak said that the Turkish authorities provided us with information about the date of the conference, the participants in the conference, and its duration.


Regarding the conference to be held in Turkey, he said that the conference will include our demands, independence of the country, withdrawal of foreign forces, and establishment of an Islamic system of government acceptable to the people of Afghanistan.


Reacting to the US plan for Afghanistan, Dr. Naeem Wardak said, “We are discussing the US plan. We will present our views in a timely manner. 


The interim government and the coalition government are not the solutions to the Afghan problem.” Couldn’t succeed. Our position on this is not like that of Ashraf Ghani but our own status and policy



  Meanwhile, the Turkish Ministry of Religious Affairs has announced that it intends to hold a joint meeting between Afghan and Turkish scholars and scholars.


 In addition to Afghan and Turkish scholars, the conference will be attended by eminent scholars from around the world who will seek a Shariah-compliant solution to the Afghan war.


 According to a statement issued by the Turkish Ministry of Religious Affairs, the head of the Afghan Ministry of Religious Affairs, Mohammad Qasim Halimi, discussed the issue with the Turkish Minister of Religious Affairs Ali Arbash via video call.


The exact date of the conference has not been announced, but the Ulema Conference is expected soon after the Istanbul Peace Conference.
