The Burmese military seized power by arresting US-backed Aung San Suu Kyi
Key leaders of the ruling National League for Democracy have also been detained. A one-year state of emergency has been declared in the country.
Burma (10bmnews Latest News) Myanmar (Burma) army has taken power by arresting US-backed ruler Aung San Suu Kyi and other leaders of her party. Troops have taken control of government installations and detained several leaders of the ruling National League for Democracy (NLD) following a sudden influx of troops into key locations including the capital.
The military is patrolling the capital Nay Pyi Taw and telephone service and state TV have been cut off while the business city of Yangon has been cut off Myanmar’s military said in a statement on military television. That has led to the decision to shut down the political leadership due to election rigging and a one-year state of emergency has been declared across the country.
The military said in a statement that all powers would remain with Army Chief Man Aung Ling during the political leadership’s detention. Tensions were high and concerns were being raised about the implementation of martial law in the country.
