Supreme Court rules on appeal against Khyber Pakhtunkhwa local body elections in the second phase

ISLAMABAD – The Supreme Court (SC) has suspended the decision of the High Court (HC) to hold Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) local body elections in the second phase.

A hearing was held in the Supreme Court against the decision of the Peshawar High Court during which the court suspended the decision of the Peshawar High Court and issued notices to the parties.

The ECP counsel argued in the Supreme Court that the Peshawar High Court Abbottabad Bench had not heard the ECP, the court had postponed the local body election schedule without hearing it.

Justice Ayesha Malik remarked that the High Court should have heard the position of the Election Commission before giving its verdict.

The court remarked that it was not confirmed that the weather conditions could hamper the election. Justice Ijaz-ul-Ahsan said that the report of the Meteorological Department was to be reviewed by the Election Commission but not by the court but by the High Court. The hearing of the case in the Supreme Court has been adjourned till February 14
