With seamless connectivity through flyovers, underpasses, and ring roads, this student hub in Rajasthan proves that innovation can keep a city moving without a single signal.

This Student City Just Went Traffic Light-Free — A First for India

In a groundbreaking move toward smarter urban mobility, Kota, Rajasthan famously known as India’s coaching capital has become the country’s first city to operate entirely without traffic lights. Thanks to innovative urban design and infrastructure upgrades, the city now enjoys uninterrupted traffic flow despite its dense population and heavy commuter movement.

The transformation was spearheaded by the Urban Improvement Trust (UIT) of Kota, which adopted a forward-thinking approach to urban planning. By developing a network of interconnected ring roads, vehicles can now easily bypass congested routes, significantly reducing travel time and gridlock across the city.

Adding to the efficiency, over two dozen flyovers and underpasses have been built at key intersections, ensuring continuous movement of vehicles without the need for traffic signals. This design not only minimizes delays but also helps reduce the risk of accidents and fuel wastage caused by frequent halts.

Kota’s achievement sets a new benchmark for traffic management in India, demonstrating that effective planning can replace traditional signal systems with smarter, more sustainable solutions.

Despite catering to lakhs of residents and thousands of students, the city’s traffic now flows seamlessly, a remarkable feat that proves how strategic infrastructure can redefine urban commuting and make punctuality the new norm in one of India’s busiest student hubs.
