Christopher Nolan revealed that his new film The Odyssey was filmed over 91 days using more than two million feet of film.
The acclaimed director said that he wanted to bring Homer’s famous Greek epic to life with the scale and realism of a major Hollywood production.
Nolan explained that he always looks for ways to do something new in cinema to push its limits.
He said that while he grew up watching mythological films, the 55-year-old icon has never seen the story of Odysseus told with this kind of weight and authenticity.
Matt Damon stars as Odysseus, reuniting with Nolan after working together on Oppenheimer and Interstellar.
Tom Holland plays his son Telemachus and the cast also includes Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong’o, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron and Jon Bernthal.
However, Nolan described the filming as challenging, with many scenes shot in real locations including the open ocean.
He said facing natural conditions every day made the story feel even more real and helped the cast understand the hardships of Odysseus’s journey.
Damon called The Odyssey a thrilling summer movie with a mythic and epic feel, saying one of the most memorable moments for him was seeing a full-scale Trojan horse recreated on set, which left him in awe.
For the unversed, the movie is scheduled to release in theaters on July 17, 2026.
